Summary
The project area is the Allpahuayo Mishana Natural Reserve (RNAM), an hour drive from Iquitos - the biggest city in Peruvian amazon. RNAM protects one of the last peatland areas and includes rainforests on white sandy soils, one of the few remaining with that characteristic. RNAM has a high number of endemic and endangered species and covers the basin head of the Nanay river, which supplies safe water to Iquitos. Regional recent climatic fluctuations have impacted wildlife and agricultural crop production, greatly affecting the local ecology and the livelihoods of inhabitants .
