Summary
Orangutan population in Danau Sentarum catchment has declined from 1,578 in 1996 to 88 in 2014, mostly
surviving in customary forests of local communities who have traditionally protected the orangutans, however
many live in poverty. The project aims to improve these communities’ livelihoods and protect the remaining orangutans and their habitat through the following activities:
• Facilitate development of micro-hydropower, clean water supply, income generation;
• Rehabilitation of degraded areas;
• Participatory forest patrol, orangutan monitoring, awareness raising
