Summary
Building on substantial grassroots commitment to conservation within Nicaragua’s Ometepe Island Biosphere Reserve, the project aims to reverse the loss of biodiversity and protect ecosystem services that underpin the livelihoods of c.42,000 people. The project will build islanders’ capacity for community-led forest and wetland protection, reforestation, conservation monitoring and management. It will increase the resilience of local livelihoods, by pursuing sustainable, market-driven agroecological production in partnership with 200 farming families (≥10% of all island farms), sharing learning locally and nationally.
